Making plans for our winter home

Another hot day today with no rain, just love these lazy summer days when it gets too warm for our comfort we turn on AC, sure is not very often we need to use it here though.
I did some work toward our decision as to where to go for the winter months, set up a chart with average temperatures and distance to travel. I use Microsoft Streets and Tips to figure out different routes, mileage, fuel costs, and time factor. I find it is quite accurate if I input all the correct parameters. Right now I am working with what if’s, then when I find a place that fits our temperature range I start checking for campgrounds in the area using the internet, very time consuming but this will be our first trip south for the winter so I need to do some investigating before we book any space for the winter. We are checking out Texas, New Mexico and Arizona and plan to spend time visiting friends along the way. We have made long trips previously, but this will be our first experience spending the winter south of the border. I always do this pre work before a long trip knowing that along the road we will have to make changes due to weather issues or deciding to stay longer at any point we may want to visit longer. I do love our portable internet dish for this purpose.

Lazy day, hot weather

Hot today here for Alberta at least 86F 30C with some humidity which of course makes it sticky, we feel lazy so we spend the day reading, chatting and doing not much else, the thought of having a campfire in the evening did not appeal, too warm, no point, will save our wood for a cooler evening. Oreo was not even into playing fetch in her usual exuberant style. A short play and she would take her fetch toy and go lay down under the shade trees. Salads, fruit, cheese, and some good heavy rye bread was our food of choice today, oh yes and some Smores Ice cream, cannot forget desert! Oh, life is so tough eh!

June 27th and 28th

Friday June 27th, nice day in the 70’s no rain, my kind of day, we spent the day doing not much of anything, sitting outside reading, playing with Oreo, walking and doing a few of daily tasks, made a little fire in our fire pit, roasted some wieners and marshmallows, not exciting but a wonderful day. Woody is settling into quiet campground life, reading books has become one of his favourite past times.

June 28th
Today Woody spent time at a new archery shop he found out about from a friend over one hour drive from here, he took his bow in, had it set up properly, changed rests, paper tuned and sited in. The owner videotaped his shooting from behind him and in front of him (no, he was not in any danger), he spent most of day at the shop but came away happy with his new rest and more excited with his new bow than before if that was possible. The shop is Pipestone Creek Archery, just outside of Millet, AB, set up on an acreage with an indoor shooting range and access to a 3 D range, the owner, Jim is knowledgeable and serves his clients with the best quality service. I spent the day working on the computer, reading and playing with Oreo, three things I very much enjoy, when I get frustrated or tired of computer work or need a break from reading I take Oreo out for a walk/play, she gets lots of exercise I get a little, a nice break for both of us. The day was warm (84F or 28C) with a little shower so we turned the AC on to eliminate some of the humidity, sure is nice to have AC. During the evening, Woody visited with some neighbours (guys that are working in the area while working on a pipeline) who were interested in seeing his African pictures while I was happy to continue reading my book (one of those books that once you start you just cannot lay aside).
July 1st being Canada Day we figured the campground might get noisy with many folks taking the Monday off to create a 4 day weekend, not so it is busy but not noisy at all, we are very happy, the campground attracts good people.

Presentation day for Catlin's grade 4 class

Spent the morning finishing the two DVD’s for Caitlin’s class, we were asked to be at the school by 2:00 pm and the presentation would fill in sometime after the students had returned from swimming, doing the chores needed for last day of clean up. Burning the second DVD became a challenge, for some reason the program I use was not performing properly, I barely finished burning it before we had to leave. We met Chris and Michelle in the classroom (Chris volunteered as a chaperone on the swimming field trip) and Michelle had arrived the same time as we had. After the students settled in the classroom the teachers handed out sheets to each student, the papers had dollar amounts (earned points for the pretend dollars) and then she showed them many items that they could purchase with the points/dollars they had earned. Excitement was high as the students choose with care the items they wanted and could afford with their earned dollar amount.

After that excitement, the students cleaned out their lockers, scrubbed them down, and made sure their desks were empty, packing everything in their backpacks.

Caitlin making sure her locker is cleared out.

Caitlin has a sticker on her forehead, one of the students was going around placing stickers on classmates and even shared with Chris, Michelle, Woody and myself. She stuck an African flag sticker on Woody, just so cool eh! The stickers were part of her purchase with the earned dollars she earned througout the year.
The time had come then for the African presentation after which the children asked many intelligent questions, which Woody answered willingly. One of the students asked how long it took for the flight to Africa and showed surprised by Woody’s answer, Woody grabbed a world globe that was close by and showed them the flight path he had travelled, student commented, “wow, sure couldn’t go there for a weekend”, then commented, “that is halfway around the world so it would take twice as long to go all the way around the world”, good thinking I thought. The kids were interested in the distance Woody was from the animals he photographed, what some animals ate, how tall they were, etc.
Overall, we enjoyed being there and the kids were great! The time passed rapidly, the teachers opened the many gifts from their students, we managed to capture a few pictures and then bade farewell to all.
Caitlin's homeroom teacher reading the card that Caitlin had prepared for her, standing beside Caitlin is her classmate that had shared her stickers with us.
No explanation needed, the smiles tell all.
A student Science teacher was making her rounds to each class she had taught this year.
The time spent there was definitely the highlight of this day.

A quiet day, exciting evening

Wednesday was just another day, Woody still adjusting to the time change, suffering from a head cold and he had just shaken one he suffered through most of his African trip. I really believe the colds are due to his immune system being run down due to lack of sleep; stress from travel, the time change and his normal habit running full speed ahead, ignoring his body’s need of rest for the last three weeks, although he is snoozing some during the day now and claims the gang retired early while in Africa. He is winding down but it is taking sometime, I do understand and would be the same after returning from such an awesome exhilarating trip to quiet campground living is a drastic change. I spent time working with the pictures from Africa, sizing and touching up a few of them and I downloaded the video from the camera. I will make a DVD of his trip for us (and friends) combining the video and pictures adding background music, transitions, borders and Woody would like to add some narration on a video portion that will be interesting. I have added narration to a video clip once, not easy to record narration that sounds smooth and interesting without ah’s, eh’s stumbles, etc. I spent most of the day working on a DVD for Caitlin’s class adding some of the animals, landscape and added some video. I will make two actually, different lengths, not sure how much time we will have for the class presentation. Woody ran some errands in town during the afternoon.
In the evening we attended our granddaughter Lindsey’s Award Ceremonies, she received an Award for excelling in Science, (she had worked on a special project with classmates), was she ever excited, proud and surprised. As always, it was wonderful to be there and share her accomplishment. When Lindsey’s name was announced, she jumped up, her jaw dropped, hand went to her mouth to cover the open mouth, and she almost ran up to receive her Award, wish we could have caught her reaction on camera it was so spontaneous. Lindsey is 12 and of course, at that age usually the response is usually somewhat conservative. No problem snapping pictures of her on this occasion, usually she runs the other way when the camera is on her but she was too excited to notice this time.

A very special award presented by Lindsey's teacher.

I think the look on Lindsey's face says it all!

After the conclusion of the ceremonies, we spent some time visiting with Tracy, congratulating Lindsey and talking with her teacher. Arrived home around 9:00 pm, an awesome way to spend part of our evening, the remainder of our evening we spent relaxing and chatting online with friends.

June 23 & 24th

Monday we spent quietly, catching up on email, talking to friends on the phone, snoozing and shopping. Woody managed an afternoon snooze, still suffering from Jet lag.

Tuesday June 24th
Today we attended granddaughter Caitlin’s school year end Awards Ceremonies, always interesting to see all the students that work hard all year to attain their achievements. As usual, the school did an excellent job organizing the affair and as I have mentioned in a previous post the school does an excellent job in rewarding the students for respect, values, academic, music, safety, and athletic abilities. When we arrived, the music teacher was directing the students in a singsong, which kept all entertained until the ceremonies began, promptly at 10:45 am. As is the practice at the Onoway Public School, the Ceremony began with the singing of Oh Canada and the Lord’s Prayer after which the Principal addressed the audience, and then turned the proceedings over to the MC for Award Ceremonies. The students are not aware of awards they may be receiving; their parents are notified that their child will receive an award but not which award, so it is exciting for parents and students. The looks on the faces of the students when their name is announced is priceless, their look of pride as they walk up to receive the award is heart warming, and the sharing of their achievements with classmates and parents after the ceremonies are finished again shows the pride of accomplishment they feel. As a grandparent, I look at all the students and pray that they will always remember the pride they felt this day and continue to live life, working toward their goals and achieving the results they expected of themselves even when at times the road gets rough.

The MC and the teachers waiting to hand out the awards to their students.

Caitlin receiving her Music Award, way to go Caitlin, we are very proud of you.

Caitlin walking on stage to recieve her Honours Award. Students have to achieve 80% or higher in all core subjects to receive this award.

Do you think that she is just a little proud of her accomplishments? Way to go Caitlin!

After the ceremonies which concluded just before lunch we followed Caitlin and Michelle to Caitlin’s classroom, Michelle introduced us the Caitlin’s teacher and while chatting with her Woody mentioned that he had just returned from Africa, we were invited to return the last day of school to do a presentation for the class with his pictures of Africa, he happily accepted the invitation. The last day of school is Thursday, which means I have to get a short DVD made in two days, which I am happy to do.
After bidding farewell to all we proceeded to the Laundromat, now that is a let down after spending such a great morning, but one must have clean clothes eh.
We managed to get a little needed shopping done in between washing and drying the clothes and on the way out of town, we stopped at a little restaurant in Onoway to have an early dinner before we returned home. The restaurant is fairly new, has good food, especially their homemade pies and other deserts, and is decorated nicely with lots of flowers, antique items, and such. We will have to go back one day and just eat desert! Onoway is a little town of about a 1000 people but do serve the surrounding rural community.

Upon arrival home, we put away the laundry, spent some time chatting with friends online in our favourite chatroom, walking Oreo, just enjoying a relaxing evening.

A Welcome back!

The day dawned cool and wet, checked the weather, supposed to rain all day, not sure what to do, postpone the “Welcome Home” gathering or call the kids and see if we should move it one of their homes. Decided we could not postpone, the food we had prepared (especially the potato salad, fresh fruit and veggies) would not survive until the next weekend and the cake I had ordered certainly would not. In the end we decided to go ahead, even of it meant we would have to crowd into the fifth wheel. The family arrived bringing lots of hugs and kisses for both of us, especially though for Grandpa/Dad, as well of lots of questions regarding his trip to Africa. After visiting for a short time, we had a viewing of the pictures and video with narration provided by Woody! We both were pleased with all the questions our grandchildren (7, 9 and 12 years old) had during and after looking at the presentation, thought they might be bored but they sure were not! We took turns sitting and standing as not everyone could sit at once, just not enough seating area but we made out just out fine, enjoying the afternoon catching up on news, sharing some highlights of our trip to Pennsylvania and just generally visiting. The grandchildren were great they played games in our bedroom, while we visited. Later in the afternoon the rain finally stopped, the sun came out and the grandkids headed to the playground to let off a little energy but too wet and cool to enjoy our meal outdoors.

The chocolate cake was real tasty, filled with fresh strawberries and lots of yummy (not to sweet) icing.

Okay enough pictures eh! Woody, cut that cake, we are all waiting!

Despite the weather, we totally enjoyed the afternoon and evening of visiting, overall we are happy that we decided to go ahead with our plans, if our family had any complaints regarding the tight space they did not voice them. Kind of cool to know that small family gatherings can be held in our little home and that was one concern we had before today.

An exciting day!

Woody made it home today safe and sound, I picked him up at the airport right on time, no hassle with customs, he said his luggage had the US custom seals on it and Canada Customs did not ask him to open his luggage at all. We were both so excited as we greeted, lots of hugs and kisses, both of us tearing up a little. On the trip home, he filled me in on some highlights, he was so tired but still elated from his awesome experience, he just could not say enough about the fantastic time he had while in South Africa. Arriving home around 1:00 pm after greeting Oreo and unloading his luggage we looked at all the pictures, wow the pictures are awesome. The area he was at is vast, ruggedly beautiful. The Acacia Tree is everywhere, there are many species of Acacia Trees, and the type of Acacia in the area that Woody was in had vey long thorns, about 4 inches, I could not pin down the exact species. Even with the long thorns, Giraffe, Kudu, and Impala graze on them. If you are interested in more information regarding the Acacia Tree click the link, they really are remarkable trees! http://www.wildwatch.com/living_library/plants-1/acacias-thorn-trees-of-africa

It is winter there now; the trees have beautiful pink or white blooms (depending on the species) in the spring.

Mountains (rising to 7000 feet in elevation)

Some roads travelled while on Safari

When these guys were on the road, we waited till they decided to leave, you did not even honk the horn at them. We needed Crocodile Dundee to work his magic at times eh.

The cottage Woody stayed in at the Lodge, it is 24 x 24, and you will note the building is constructed of stone with thatched roof. All the buildings are constructed like this due to termites; there was a main lodge, several cottages and larger lodges with separate rooms for accommodations. Woody was lucky and had the cottage all to himself, some of the group shared a cottage, and others stayed in the large lodge.

After viewing his 300 plus pictures we watched the video he had taken while being chauffeured on the mountain roads, feeding white lions, Rhinos with babies and some caves he visited with ancient drawings left there by the bush people who inhabited them.
I will post more pictures as I get time and I hope to have the videos and all the pictures uploaded for viewing within the next few weeks for anyone interested to view.

Woody is exhausted after almost 3 weeks of excitement, long flights, (36 hours down and 44 hours back) the drastic time change (daytime here/night time in Africa) so will take a while to rest up and adjust to being back in Canada.

Our daughter’s Michelle, Tracy and families are coming over tomorrow for a “Welcome Home” get together so must finish the preparations. It is a beautiful warm day here today and praying for the same type weather tomorrow.

Woody arrives home today

Big day today, well at least in my eyes, Woody arrives home this evening and I can hardly wait to see his face, give and receive hugs and kisses, I am still praying that all the gang arrive home safely.

Well got a call, the plane was three hours late arriving in Dulles Woody and friends missed their connecting flights, so are on standby waiting for a flight. He is hopeful that he will be able to catch the 1:00 pm flight, if not then he misses his connection to Edmonton, told me he will call again when he has landed in Denver. I am very happy that he and the gang are safely in Dulles.
I completed a few tasks, took Oreo for a walk, and then off to town to purchase goodies for our Sunday gathering and fill up the truck so I will be all set to make the run to the Airport. Too hot today to take Oreo and leave her in the truck so I had to leave her at home, poor puppy I hate leaving her alone. On the way to town I hear this very loud whistling noise, thinking it was something on the radio maybe I shut off the radio, oh no it is not the radio, nowhere to pull over safely (narrow 2 lane highway). I am looking for a place to pull off, just as I spot a place and start to slow down, the noise stops along with the air system, okay I think, I can live with this, and open the windows continue to town. Woody may be able to figure out what is going on and if not will take the truck for the needed repair, no problem. When I had completed the needed shopping the truck was a boiler factory, so I opened all the windows, not much help when driving in town, so while sitting melting in the heat, at a red light, I try it again, on it comes blowing nothing but warm air of course, so I pushed the ac button, cool that works, the truck cab cooled down nicely but the fan runs fast then slow for no apparent reason but at least it worked the rest of the way home. Come home unload groceries take Oreo out for a play, check our favourite message boards, post an update message on the board, work on the blog, I am feeling antsy waiting for a call from Woody, obviously he did not make the 1:00 pm flight. I had dinner, sat outside and read for a while sitting in the shade while Oreo snooped around in the yard. About 8:00 pm I decide to take Oreo for another walk, the campground is full of course being Friday evening, well she sees some dogs and actually barks at them, she has never done that before, not good, I take her home. Now what I think, decided that I would probably be making a night drive to pick up Woody so decide to grab a snooze. I had just fallen asleep when the phone rings, they have finally landed in Denver, 9:00 pm and he will call back when he has arranged a flight from Denver. I had been emailing our daughters and friends apprising them of the developments through the day so I sent another email. Decided I would try the walk thing again, so off to the park, played fetch with Oreo for a bit, check my watch, time is dragging. I spot a couple with two dogs coming toward the area we are playing in, so I leashed Oreo and started walking home, phone rings, Woody has a flight at 8:30 am and will overnight with a fellow hunter, okay that is great, he is totally exhausted and I can settle down now knowing what is happening and all is taken care of in Denver. Tomorrow is now the big day!

A good day, planning for Woody's return

As I write this post, I cannot help thinking of Woody and the rest of the gang. At this time they are in flight from Johannesburg to Dulles, I have been saying short prayers for their safe return whenever I thought about them, checking time of flights, figuring out where they are in relation to MDT (our time) and just plain thinking about them.
I took Oreo for an appointment with the vet, this morning, nothing serious thankfully, after which I made a stop to order a “Welcome Home” cake for our gathering on Sunday. On the way home I stopped at daughter’s Tracy to drop off some movies, she was not home but we had prearranged a drop off spot. After returning home, taking Oreo for her playtime, I loaded up the laundry and drove to the Laundromat in Onoway (small town near the campground). I got the laundry going, then decided I needed a snack so off to the grocery store where I was lucky enough to manage a short visit with our grandson Christopher who works part-time there, he was working at the check out counter, there was not a line up. I must say he is an awesome young man and not just because his is our grandson am I saying that, he is a very caring, responsible young man and of course, we love him to death! That was a nice surprise; it sure brightened my afternoon. Well back to the Laundromat, I was sitting reading a book waiting for the washer when I suddenly thought, hey, there is a car wash in this town, I could actually wash the truck while the dryer is running, which I did, returning 3 minutes before the dryer had quit, wow good timing I thought and it sure beat sitting at the Laundromat. Arriving home, I received a very big homecoming welcome from Oreo after I dragged the laundry into the fifth wheel, poor puppy I had to leave her at home. I checked email and the message boards quickly, then got busy doing the pre prep cooking for our Welcome Home gathering. Upon completion of those tasks, Oreo and I went for playtime then a walk onto the bridge to view the sunset over the lake, I so love the sunsets over the lake, tonight the colours were orange and pink with very few wispy clouds just showing a hint of pink and blue, not a breath of wind, I just stood on the bridge listening to ducks and geese call and splash about in the water. It is so peaceful and soul renewing to watch wildlife in their natural habitat. I am so enjoying this laid back, relaxing lifestyle, do whatever moves you at the time, life just does not get better eh!
Got a late start this morning, just had poured my first cup of coffee when Woody called. Tomorrow Thursday at 5:00 am, the gang will be leaving Hunter Hills Safari in the East London area heading for the Port Elizabeth Airport, on the first leg of their journey home. From Port Elizabeth, they fly to Johannesburg, and then to Dulles Airport from Dulles each will journey to their respective homes (there are 13 hunters in their group). Huck and Woody will fly to Denver, and then Woody will fly to Edmonton, arriving Friday the 20th at 8:38 pm MDT.
Woody shot a white Blessbuck yesterday, he said the Common and the White Blessbuck he got would be in the record book, and he is a happy hunter! He said Hunter Hills Safari far exceeded his expectations in everyway and of course would love to return. I can’t wait for all the stories from all the hunters to be posted on our favourite message board,
Wishes and prayers for a safe trip home for the gang in Africa!
After checking email, our favourite message boards and doing a few household tasks, I took Oreo for her walk/play time at the park, upon returning home grabbed a bite to eat and we headed into town to do a little shopping. The day was nice but cool enough to leave Oreo in the truck while I picked up a few items. She is so good when I leave her in the truck, she curls ups and sleeps. Oreo and I returned home after making sure she had water and food, I travelled to our daughter Michelle’s home to spend some time with Caitlin, she needed some company until her Mom and brother returned home. We had a first-rate visit just the two of us and I stayed for a while catching on news after Michelle and Christopher got home. During the evening, I was reading a message from a friend when some unexpected company arrived with bone in hand for Oreo. We visited until about 1:00 am, then I took Oreo for a quick play in the yard, she had missed our usual evening walk and I knew she needed a little more outside time and exercise, after which we both went to bed. I am so looking forward to Woody’s return; I can feel the excitement building within myself and I know Oreo will just go nuts!

Phone calls and daily journal

Michelle called this morning to inquire how I am doing, I so appreciate the girls taking time from their busy schedules to call. In fact I am doing very well as is Oreo. We have settled into our own life here, working, playing walking, reading and really doing very little else, enjoying the slow pace of life. I spent some time searching the internet for African music, as I will make a DVD of the pictures Woody has taken and would like the background music to fit. I have an idea of what I want but not sure I can purchase in locally located stores. The website I found was great, could listen to clips of all the songs on every album they displayed.
Woody shot his Gemsbok with a rifle, had no choice, the string snapped on the BowTech, not while he was using it but while riding in the truck, he heard a twang, looked over and sure enough the string had snapped. The positives are it happened at the end of the Safari and no one was hurt. No one will hunt tomorrow; they are going to hang out, relax and reflect, then Thursday head for home, departing from Port Elizabeth at 12:20 pm arriving in Edmonton on Friday at 8:38 pm. They are in the Wildschutsberg Game Reserve in the Eastern Cape of South Africa, Woody said it is raining buckets and cool, June and July being the coldest months there and staff remarked it is not unusual to see snow on the mountaintops, some of which are 7000 feet in elevation. If you’re interested in taking a look at the area click the link, http://www.wildschutsberg.co.za/index.htm, there is a link (near the bottom) to Hunter Hills Safari. Actually when I checked both websites, many pictures are exactly the same, owned by the same company maybe. Tonight they are going to view white lions being fed in a neighbouring area; the lions are confined so safe enough.
After a late lunch, I took Oreo for playtime to the park, upon returning home I decided I would clean the cab of the truck, wash all the doggie nose prints off the back, and side windows, wipe all the dust from the dash, etc. I had just about completed the job when the rain came, oh well I will finish later or another day. The rain ceased, wind calmed down so around 7:30 pm played with Oreo in our little yard for awhile then decided to finish cleaning the truck. Oreo sat in the truck happily while I washed the windows and finished the cleaning. Spent some time checking out our favourite message boards, chatting with friends online, took Oreo out for a late night play, and then headed to bed with my book

Monday, June 16, 2008

Not much to report today, spent the whole day cleaning up my computer, moving items to the external drive and deleting many files that I no longer require, man that uses bunches of time but it is one of those jobs that I have been putting off and thought I had better do it while Woody is away. I now have just over half of the hard drive free and that is where I like it to be, runs much better when not overloaded with files. I regularly scan for spyware, etc, and defrag once a week which helps keep the computer in good operating order.
The weather is gorgeous today, sunny, a few clouds floating around with a lovely breeze, around 72F and it is 6:56 pm, I have the doors and windows open, almost as good as being outside. Oreo is lethargic today, I was worried that she may be sick, she does not have a fever but I had to ask her if she wanted to go outside and that is not like her at all, she is usually begging me to go outside and play with her. Once outside she seemed fine, so guess she is just a tired puppy dog today!
Early evening Oreo and I went for a walk to the park and played fetch for a short time, upon returning I watched a movie, while she slept at my feet. She is so cute, on the way to the park she carries her fetch ball (in her mouth), and drops it when a scent grabs her attention, after a good play she carries the ball, not paying attention to scents around her. Walked over the bridge just after 10:00 pm, spotted a skunk snooping around the shoreline in the long grass, obviously he is hunting for eggs, also watched some muskrats swimming about, I was kind of surprised to see muskrat but the lakeshore is swampy since the level has dropped over several years of drought in this area. There were a couple of rowboats out enjoying the calm lake. The lake is perfect for just puttering around watching wildlife. On the way back I kept an eye out for Mr. Skunk sure did not want to be anywhere close to him. Oreo had spotted him from the bridge, was very interested, she has no idea what a disaster an unexpected encounter with a skunk could be. The sunset was not as spectacular as last night but the lake was like glass and still beautiful to watch the wildlife, could hear thunder in the distance, dark clouds in the SW so will probably experience a thundershower or two tonight.
I am feeling very content, safe and happy, this is a great place to be!

Call from Woody, and daily happenings

Update from Africa and a couple of corrections regarding previous news. I made a couple of errors, Woody shot the Blue Wildebeest with a bow and the Blessbuck with a rifle, for those asking why he choose to use a rifle it was on the advice of his PH. He was advised that the warthogs there are bush hogs and he would not be able to get a shot with the bow, the Blessbuck is a plains animal and would not get close enough to shoot with a bow.

He did not hunt today, made the trek to the ancient caves, and said they had to climb like Billy Goats to reach them but worth it, the caves are fantastic and he took many pictures. Tonight they are going “lamping”, night hunting with lamps for varmints, a practice used to control pest animals in the area. Tomorrow Woody will hunt for a Gemsbok with bow, instead of a Kudu, advised it takes about 4 days of hunting to get a Kudu so made the trade (same money).
Woody said the lodge is in the middle of nowhere and all kinds of wildlife, even Rhino’s walk right through the grounds of the lodge and they have to be careful walking in the grounds after dinner.

After Woody’s call I updated our friends via the HR message board, answered emails, and watched campers pull out, the campground was full this weekend as I expect each weekend to be. I am pleased that even though the campground was full, it was quiet, no barking dogs, loud music or late parties at all. There are quad trails close by, campers with quads drove them quietly out to trail ride, kids road their bikes about, people walked their dogs, just a busier place that during the week but no problems, sure hope all weekends are this good.
After lunch, I took Oreo out for a walk and a play in park. It is cool today with a wind and threatening to rain at times then sunny, a good day to update the blog and catch up with other chores. I spent some time contemplating and planning a “Welcome Home Gathering” for Woody and emailed our girls the invitation asking for their ideas. About 10:00 pm Oreo and I went for our evening walk, we walked across the bridge which goes over the narrow part of the lake, the sunset was breath taking, no wind, the lake was like glass, reflecting the sky which had a few clouds all blue and pink in the sunset. Hundreds of birds floated on the water and were flying back and forth over the bridge there were ducks, geese and some I could not recognize as they appeared as silhouettes on the lake, the birds were calling to each other, again I could only recognize the ducks and geese what a peaceful scene. Wish I could paint; it would make an awesome picture, not sure a camera could capture the scene in all its beauty, not that I have one at present, Woody has it with him, ah well I am sure there will more scenes like that through the summer. Upon returning home Oreo immediately went to bed. I took my book and did the same a little later. Another good day!

Father's Day gathering

After doing some chores, Oreo and I travelled to Tracy and Keith’s for a Father’s Day get together, Michelle and family also in attendance. I took Oreo for a walk on the trails at Keith and Tracy’s upon arrival knowing that would help her settle down and greet everyone with a little less exuberance. Oreo still gets so excited when she meets people (especially her favourite people) and wants to jump all over them sure hope one day she will outgrow that habit of wanting to jump on people. She behaves very well after her initial outburst of joy and happiness; she sits just vibrating all over waiting to be hugged and petted while being controlled on a leash. While walking we met up with Caitlin, Brooklyn and Lindsey (granddaughter’s), the girls know not to run right up to Oreo so stood back waiting a bit before approaching to greet Oreo, I asked them to come over one at a time, and of course they did. After short greetings, Lindsey and Brooklyn headed back to the yard, Caitlin, Oreo and I proceeded along the path. I released Oreo, we played fetch for bit, then Caitlin and I chatted as Oreo played in the field along the path. As we approached the yard, I leashed Oreo as I could see Chris (son-in-law) one of Oreo’s favourite people and I knew she would go nuts, Chris greeted Oreo with lots of cuddling and petting. After the greetings between dog and family, I was able to collect my hugs, I then tied Oreo close by to give her a chance to calm down while we all feasted on roasted wieners, hamburgers, salad, baked potatoes, veggies, watermelon and pineapple. When we finished feasting, I let Oreo off her leash, for the remainder of the afternoon and evening she was fine, of course, the fact that Chris, Keith and the girls spent time playing fetch with her so she was ready to rest in between games. I must mention that while sitting around the campfire Keith pointed out a Red Tail hawk hovering and gliding high in sky, calling, three pelicans flew by and a Blue Heron. They live just west of a lake and one day Keith spotted an Osprey carrying a fish in it’s talons fly by their living room window, now that would be so cool! Chris and Keith spent time shooting targets with pellet rifles while the girls and I visited, Oreo resting and the little girls played. Christopher (grandson) arrived just in time for dinner (he has a part-time job), we grabbed some leftovers, then Christopher and Chris left to see a movie (Christopher’s Father’s Day gift). I left later loaded down with movies loaned to me by the kids, thank you so much girls. Oreo and I enjoyed an awesome day, we arrived home around 8:30 pm, she slept the whole way home. After arriving home, I emptied the tanks in the fifth wheel, checked email, our favourite message forums and settled down to watch a movie. Oreo curled up beside my chair and did not even ask to go outside for the remainder of the evening. We are so blessed!

Gloomy start but awesome ending

Woke up to rainy, windy, cool weather today, just laid for a bit and listened to the rain pound on the roof, Oreo was not stirring at all, after awhile I got up and got ready for the day. Oreo did not ask to go out, she just got up from her bed and curled up on the floor beside my desk, good dog I thought, I did not want to take her out in this rain. I was checking our favourite message boards and the dish lost signal it was raining hard alright. Just then the phone rang, I grabbed the phone and headed for the door as I said Hello, (the signal is better standing in the open door), I could hear Woody saying “Hello, hello, Patsy are you there?” I opened the door further then he could hear me. I stood in the open doorway being rained on, I tried backing up a little standing just inside the doorway, but then I would hear Woody say “are you still there” so, I moved ahead a little and the connection was good; we had a very good, short conversation, both of us happy to be chatting with each other, Woody did most of the talking and that was okay with me, I wanted to hear about the experiences he and gang were having in Africa. He was excited to share his news but also wanted assurance that we were doing okay here on our own, I assured him we were doing fine, and I was enjoying the quiet time as well as the family.
Woody shot a Blesbuck (spelling) with his bow, a Boone and Crocket he is told, and yesterday he got a warthog with a rifle; unfortunately, he has not been able to get any video of his hunts but has many pictures. They will enjoy a pig roasted on a spit courtesy of the owners, I think Huck shot the pig and the owner added a Fallow Deer as a gift, which will be donated, I am not sure who had the privilege of shooting the deer. When I asked him what Huck and StickNString (nickname) had taken, he said there are so many guys getting their animals he cannot remember who took what, so we will have to wait until all the stories are posted. The lodge offers Photo Safaris at no extra charge and tomorrow the safari is to some caves containing ancient writings, Woody is going along with whoever else is interested. Woody repeated several times what an awesome experience this is, how well they are taken care of and everyone is having a super time.
Well you know that was a highlight in my day, the rest of the day I spent time working on the blog, watching campers pull in for the weekend and other daily routine things.
Our daughter Tracy called confirming details for a Father’s Day get-together at their home tomorrow of course it will be minus one Father but fun none the less.

A fifth wheel pulled in just a short time ago, Canadian Sport Toy Hauler triple axel, not sure it is longer than ours but I know it is heavier, might get brave and venture over for a chat sometime this weekend. We contemplated purchasing a Canadian Sport Toy Hauler while we were shopping for a suitable fifth wheel for fulltime Rving but found this one for a good deal, it had what we required, decision made!

Deb, daughter, called, all excited to share the news that she had been in contact with Colleen, a girl that belonged to the marching band that three of our daughters were members of years ago. I was involved in the band as well, so this was exciting news. Turns out that Colleen and Deb both live in British Columbia, and Colleen is travelling to Kelowna from her home in Kamloops to attend a rodeo with Deb, oh yes they both love horses. Colleen is also in the process of setting up a website for all previous band members to access and keep in touch, very cool eh! Deb was asking if I still had pictures of the band years and could they be scanned to use on the website. I assured her I did have pictures and would scan them, as soon as possible, guess that will be my new project eh.

Wow, the campground is full, I took Oreo for a walk to the area she can run free off the leash for a fetch game, there is maybe two spots left for small units/tents or tent trailer. As I was leaving our campsite this evening to walk Oreo our new neighbours to the west came right over to greet Oreo, they obviously love dogs, the gentlemen said “let her come to me, she won’t hurt me”, I replied, “oh yes she might, she will jump all over you!”, he responded “oh, that’s no problem”, so I allowed Oreo to get close, sure enough she jumped, he just got down on his haunches, hugged her and started petting her which of course she loved, as he cuddled and petted her some more, she settled very quickly and was very happy with the attention, when he got up, he commented on what a beautiful dog she was. He also made the comment, “a pinch collar, shame on you”, I explained it was the only way I can control Oreo around strangers and other dogs, she is a very strong dog, and as much as she has met new people, she still goes nuts. I personally feel using a pinch collar is not the best and will cease to use it when I know she will behave in those situations without it. The dog training classes we enrolled her in insisted that all dogs wear pinch collars during the training sessions and Oreo learned quickly to obey when wearing it and did not behave when she did not wear it. I would rather keep her safe and feel safe myself, knowing she will obey than to walk without it. We continued to the park had a good game of fetch and returned home, Oreo immediately went to sleep, I chatted a bit with friends online, grabbed my book and headed for bed. Oh yes, there was a gorgeous sunset tonight, all purple, pink and blue, a spectacular sight and awesome end to a good day!

Creating DVD's and meeting with old friends

Decided today I would get a start on creating DVD’s of our family memories captured on VHS tapes. Picked out a couple of VHS tapes, plugged one into our equipment purchased to record VHS to DVD, well I have sound but no picture, hmmm I thought maybe this tape is not good, so I tried a tape that I knew was good, still no picture, I tried all combinations of settings, no picture. We purchased all our home theatre entertainment equipment for our RV new and had it professional set up before we left on our trip east. Now I am thinking I have not used this equipment since it was installed, I must have forgotten some of the instructions, I will stop by Stony Audio and Visual Appliances we purchased the equipment from there and have a chat with Dean, who hooked up the equipment, he, his Dad and Mom own and operate the business. I am meeting a couple of friends today for lunch in Stony Plain so that works out perfectly. I made drawings of the connections I could see, tucked the note in my purse, readied myself to leave making sure Oreo had water and a good play before departing.
I met with Carolyn and Judy at a new restaurant in Stony Plain at noon; we had a splendid visit, catching up on family, travels, and life in general, spent two hours chatting away over lunch and it was not long enough. Judy had another appointment and Carolyn had to run home to finish packing their trailer for an extended weekend trip. The food was tasty, well-prepared, service okay but the place was noisy, decided we would choose a different restaurant for our next meeting. I completed a couple of errands then stopped to pick Dean’s brain, hopeful he could solve the issues I was experiencing with the DVD/VHS transfer equipment. Alas, Dean was not available but his Dad (Ken) discussed some pointers with me and I returned home with hope that I would be able to begin the job of transferring the tapes to DVD’s. Not to be so, I tried all different combinations of settings, still no picture, bummer, guess I will have to wait until Dean can pay us a visit and walk me through the process or correct whatever the issue is. It could be something as simple as a wire shaking loose during our travels but I am not going to untie the machines, (the equipment is secured for travel) I will wait until Woody returns, all the other equipment works perfectly and I would hate to mess that up! Hmm now what to do to occupy my time until Woody returns, besides reading, relaxing, visiting with friends, ,family, walking playing with Oreo, and working on this blog, oh I do have such a tough life eh LOL

Caitlin's School Awards, call from Woody

Attended granddaughter Caitlin’s Term Three Award day at school this morning and really enjoyed watching all the students receiving recognition for their efforts. Caitlin is in Grade 4 this year and attends the Onoway Elementary School, a very good public school. I was impressed and pleased from the beginning, Oh Canada started the ceremonies off, then the Lord’s Prayer was said. The school goes to great lengths assuring that the students are rewarded for more than just scholastic ability. There were awards for safety, music, athletics, attendance, and one for being helpful/respectful of classmates, other students, and teachers. This school puts heavy emphasis on teaching respect and values they are endeavouring to build positive confident young people. Caitlin loves going to school and has earned many awards, I shall be attending the year-end Awards day on June 24th to support Caitlin, it really is a pleasure to partake and observe the school working hard to build character among our youth.
After bidding farewell to Caitlin and Michelle, I headed to Onoway to do the laundry and to do some quick shopping. While there Woody called me, now that was a very exciting unexpected call. He called from the Safari office in Africa filling me in on a few details of the Safari. I was so excited to hear his voice and get some information on how the Safari hunt was progressing, I felt like a schoolgirl receiving a call from her new beau. I of course was on my cell phone and after a short conversation the connection dropped (coverage is very bad around the Onoway area) but at least I know he and his friends are having an awesome experience, he has gotten a Springbok (spelling) and Duiker with his bow and a Wildebeest with the rifle. He commented that Hunting Hills Safari Lodge is better than a five star resort, every evening they are being served a candlelight dinner (choice of menu items) along with wine. Their laundry is done daily and all the staff are treating them royally, I cannot wait until his return to see all the pictures and hear the stories. I feel much better now that I heard from the love of my life in person; I figured out the lack of communication is what has been bothering me, not just the fact that he is away, I have always been able to call Woody anytime I choose to do so or we have made pre-arranged call times during absences. Do not get me wrong though, I am enjoying the quiet, time spent with family, chatting with friends and reading books until the wee hours in the morning, life is wonderful!

Catching up on some tasks

Cool and showery today, worked on the blog, did some needed house cleaning, paid some bills online, checked email regularly and our favourite forum hopeful that I would receive some word from the Africa crew. Seems so weird not being able to communicate whenever I choose with Woody, just to know how his day went, did anyone bag an animal, in short just how things are going for the whole gang. I have many things that I planned on attending to while Woody is in Africa and I will work at them as the days go by, probably will not complete all the tasks I planned on completing though as each task is very time consuming and I know I will not spend the time I expected I would due to my head not really being into getting the tasks done. I would rather visit friends, family, walk, play with Oreo than settle down, and work on the projects I planned for myself. I do hate the disjointed non-attached feeling I have since Woody left. I cannot believe the feelings I am experiencing, I honestly believed I would be over that feeling by now. Ah well, I shall take Oreo for her walk and play in the field that always is fun! I am happy I have her company, although she does not talk much eh! LOL

Visiting Tracy a & family, email from Woody

Worked on my blog in the am, downloading email during the course of the morning, I noticed an address I did not recognize right away, I clicked on it and was going to add the address to my blocked sender list, then recognized the name “Hunter Hills”, wow an email from Woody, my heart jumped as I clicked to open it. I cannot describe the feelings I experienced while reading the short note informing me that all had arrived safely, saying it was a fantastic place and he had hunted there for the first time as well as some personal greetings of course. I read it over again, really wanting more information but happy to have heard from him at all. Woody also said the email is slow and not always working, sure hope I hear from him again, I will wait and hope. Spent a very relaxing pleasurable afternoon/evening at our daughter Tracy’s today. I took Oreo with me at Tracy’s invitation; they have a fenced area she could stay in while we visited. Well Oreo was not happy, whined, cried, etc., she was not happy at all to be fenced and away from us, I went out and commanded her to stop! I wanted her to stop her bad behaviour before I let her out of the kennel and allow her to be with us. While Tracy and I were outside waiting for Oreo to calm down, Brooklyn arrived home on the bus, soon as she saw me (Tracy had not told the kids I was coming over, she wanted to surprise them) Brooklyn came running as fast as she could yelling “Grammy, Grammy”, she ran up and threw her arms around me, saying “I am so happy to see you, glad you are back” what a great feeling. A few minutes later she asked where Grandpa was, Tracy told her, Grandpa is in Africa, she looked at us and said”, that is a long ways away”. I thought wow she is only seven and knows that, I do not think I would have known that at her age. After Brooklyn had taken her backpack in the house and emptied the contents putting away the required items we headed to the kennel to rescue Oreo, she did not behave very well at all, I had her leashed and had to grab her ear to force her to settle down and not jump all over Brooklyn, I was thinking oh man, bad plan bringing Oreo with me. Tracy suggested we take a walk around the acreage in hopes of calming her down. Keith has done an awesome job of landscaping their acreage, planted many trees, created walking paths, an archery range, and playground equipment for the girls, a nice fire pit, surrounded with paving stone and they have privacy now that the trees have grown, it really is a beautiful place. Tracy’s idea helped by the time we completed our walk Oreo was much calmer, we settled on the deck to visit, I kept Oreo leashed; she still was not calm enough to settle down completely. Lindsay arrived home from school and of course, Oreo went nuts again, I leashed her to my chair and commanded her to lie down, well she complied at the moment but I had to keep reminding her. Eventually Oreo calmed down, Tracy, Lindsay and Brooklyn visited until it was time for the girls to complete their chores and set the table for dinner, Keith arrived home from work shortly so we retired to the kitchen and enjoyed homemade lasagne with side of veggies. Oreo was content to stay on the deck while we enjoyed our dinner. After dinner Brooklyn played with Oreo on the deck, although I did keep her leashed, Oreo enjoyed the attention and it was fun to watch Brooklyn hugging Oreo and playing with her. Lindsay being a pre teen disappeared to her room after dinner, until it was time to get ready for Kung Fu class; both girls are enrolled in Kung Fu and totally love it. Keith and I wandered out in the yard with Oreo while Tracy chauffeured the girls to Kung Fu. Keith was waiting for a couple to arrive that had called regarding the trailer they were selling, they have purchased a larger, newer one this spring, and while he was waiting, Keith played fetch with Oreo, Tracy returned and then the buyers showed up a short time later. Tracy and I returned to the deck while Keith showed the trailer. Yes, it was sold much to Tracy and Keith’s delight. I left for home as Tracy left to pick up the girls from Kung Fu, it was an awesome afternoon spent with much loved family. I do feel blessed.

A quiet day

Went for a short drive into Onoway today to fuel up the truck and do a little shopping taking Oreo with me, it was cool, no problem leaving her in the truck while I shopped for a few items. She loves riding in the truck and waited patiently while I completed my errands. Returning home grabbed a bit to eat and proceeded to the field for playtime. On our walk through the picnic area three dogs came running toward us, accompanied by children who could not control the dogs, one was a huge dog, I pulled Oreo close to me with her leash and commanded her to sit as the dogs were all around us and sniffing at Oreo, the kids came running over calling their dogs and apologizing regarding their dogs behaviour. I was worried when I saw them coming, just never know what will happen in a situation like that. Thankfully, Oreo remained sitting and took all the unwanted attention in her stride, no growling, or any show of hostility from any of the dogs. The kids finally convinced their dogs to follow them back to the playground. We continued to the field had a short fetch play, then I walked home via the road, did not want to encounter the dogs again. Upon returning home I played some more with her in our little yard, then she proceeded to play on her own. I love to watch Oreo play with her favourite toy, a rubber bone on a rope, she tosses it, swings it, runs around the yard sideways, tossing and flinging the toy, she hits herself with the toy but does not stop, when she gets tired of playing with it herself, she drops it in front of me to toss for her and when she is totally tired she lays down, rolls on her back and then proceeds to play it with her paws. What a hoot to watch! When Woody gets back with the video cam, we have to get a clip of her to enjoy. One day she will not play like this and it is very precious. During the evening, I watched a movie then curled up with a good book.

June 5th to 7th

June 5th and 6th
I spent two very lazy days, reading books, working on the blog, walking and playing with Oreo.

Stories of Woody’s stop over in Colorado from a couple of friends at the links below, our favourite forum. I do believe fun was had by all! You will not be able to view the photos posted unless you click on the link within the post but you can read the posts. The stories are a fun read though.

June 7th
Went to a charity auction with Michelle and Chris today, the auction was to raise funds for helper dogs for autistic children in the area. This auction was for a specific child as well as to raise awareness of the foundation (Dogs with Wings), educate people on how helper dogs can assist families with an autistic child, and some of the challenges living with an autistic child. The event was well attended with excellent support from the community businesses and private persons. There were trained dogs in attendance as well as dogs in training, information of becoming a foster home for the dogs, entertainment provided, demonstrations of trained dogs, and dinner was provided (included in the ticket cost); over all an excellent event. I did not need anything but bid on some consumable items, for example homemade pies! I will make a donation online, as this is an excellent cause in my estimation. I did not win the pies, guess I will have to purchase or bake some pies myself eh. I returned home around 8:00 pm, greeted by Oreo who was very excited and happy to see me back. Gave her dinner then took her for a long walk and a play in the open field, upon returning home she settled down and slept while I watched a movie. Ah, life is tough eh! LOL Very quiet without Woody around.

Woody is on his way to Africa

Getting up at 1:30 am was a struggle, we should have turned in earlier than we did but alas, we could not. We had some coffee and toast, Woody finished packing his carry on bag and off we went. A positive for travelling that time of morning, there was not much traffic. We arrived at the airport at 4:00 am, his flight was leaving at 6:05 am, and of course, they ask that you arrive 2 hours early for an International flight. We were on time, but the check in desk was not open and there was already a line up for check in, so we stood in the line-up, finally the check in desk opened at 4:38, a short time later more staff arrived and they opened 2 more check in desks, Woody got checked in (only passengers allowed up the to the check in desks) so I stood by and waited. I waved Woody goodbye and blew him a kiss as he also did, then he disappeared into customs. I went upstairs to an area where one can see the planes leaving but decided to not wait, there were many planes lined up, all Air Canada, so decided to head home, no point in waiting. Thinking back, I should have at least taken a picture of him but neither of us thought about doing that guess my memory will have to serve on this occasion. I proceeded home but could not sleep, just hopeful that all would go well for Woody going through customs and the flight. Ultimately, about 10:00 am I crawled into bed and fell asleep. Woody called just after 11:00 am to let me know that all went well only lost his shampoo and body wash, had not thought about the liquid restriction, but oh well not a big deal that is easily replaced. I read for a while thinking I would fall asleep again, that did not happen so I got up and took Oreo out for a walk, had a bite to eat and then spent some more time with Oreo outside. Michelle and Chris had invited me over for a pizza fondue, so headed over to their house about 3:30 pm or so. Enjoyed the visit and the meal, but was feeling a bit detached from the world at this point, it has been a long while since I have been separated from Woody. The last long separation we had was his trip to Japan in 1995, he was gone for 3 months, then home for 2 weeks and gone again for 2 months, I kept reminding myself that this trip was just over 2 weeks, not really long at all. I know this is an experience of a lifetime for Woody, I will be just fine with family, and friends close by, along with Oreo to play with and demand my attention. Life is good!

Another busy day

Well today is packing day for Woody and checking his list twice, this is the last day before leaving on the big trip to Africa. We will be up at 1:30 am for the trip to the airport on the first leg of his journey. Woody will spend time with friends in Colorado until June 7th before boarding the flight to Dulles Airport with friend Huck, who is also going to Africa. Oh yeah he is wired for sure and I cannot blame him. We both had an appointment for a much-needed haircut, stopped for dinner at one our favourite restaurants in Spruce Grove after our haircuts and a catch up visit with Shelley who has cut our hair for more than 10 years now, a super nice young woman who now owns the Salon, bought it this year. We came home, sat outside for awhile, Woody loaded his bow and large suitcase after checking once again, making sure he had not forgot anything important, put his important papers in the pocket of his oil slick, along with his passport and flight tickets. We are sure that everything is in order now, we log in to our favourite chat room in hopes that we can relax a bit chatting with friends so we can sleep. We had a good visit, Woody bade goodbye to our friends and we logged out early, then we both chatted for a while still not really wanting to go to bed and at the same time knowing we should for tomorrow would be a long day.

Errand day

Woody spent the whole day running around getting needed items for me as well as for his trip to Africa, came home for about one hour, leaving to meet with Scott (he bought our house) for dinner and spend some time practicing with his bow. James, Scott’s son and wife Jillian were happy to see Woody, they enjoyed an awesome visit. The practice went very well and boosted Woody’s confidence with his new bow, he needed the confidence, and it was time very well spent. I was invited as well but felt it would be unfair to Oreo, poor puppy is still not feeling confident that this campsite is her home. I spent my time cleaning up our little house, playing and walking Oreo. I gave our home a real good cleaning, windows, nooks and crannies, washing all the cupboards, vacuuming, scrubbing floors, it is small but gets very dirty quickly the way we live it in and hadn’t given it a good cleaning since we were at Dave’s. I just did not touch the man room (garage), lol.
